I could barely tell you the plot of Chungking, but I know that by the time Leung and Wong are talking about her travels at the takeaway counter, there is a palpable sense of hope and promise, and that's more than most filmmakers are able to elicit through intense exposition and plot. He's certainly one of the few remaining directors whose catalogue is incredibly self-referential and of a piece, and definitely one of the "vibiest" of the last few decades. This time, CKE hit me like a ton of bricks, as did Happy Together, yet everything else for the most part left me cold. ![]() Then, earlier this year, my city had a massive WKW retrospective where I saw all of his features, two at a time, over four weekends. ![]() Seriously though, yeah you're right, maybe Wong is just not your thing? I tried a handful of his flicks including Chungking and In the Mood For Love last year and couldn't get around them. ![]()
